Inarius
A fallen angel who forged a world to escape the Eternal Conflict, only to become its greatest threat.
Inarius is a fallen angel and one of the most pivotal figures in the creation of Sanctuary, the mortal realm where humanity resides. Originally a high-ranking Archangel within the High Heavens, he grew disillusioned with the eternal, unending conflict between the forces of Light and Darkness known as the Eternal Conflict. Seeking an end to this cyclical warfare, he conspired with Lilith, the daughter of Mephisto, to steal a portion of their divine essence.

Lore & Background
Driven by a desire for peace and an end to the Eternal Conflict, Inarius stole a fragment of the Prime Evils' essence alongside Lilith. Together, they used this stolen power to craft the Worldstone, a magical artifact that would act as a shield against both Heaven and Hell. Within its protective barrier, they created Sanctuary, a hidden realm where their offspring, the Nephalem, could live free from divine manipulation. However, Inarius's motivations were not purely altruistic; he feared his children's potential and sought to control them.
In Their Own Story
The air in the chamber was thick with the scent of ozone and old blood. Inarius stood before the shimmering surface of the Worldstone, his golden armor tarnished by centuries of exile. He watched the mortals below through a scrying pool, their lives flickering like fragile candles against the encroaching dark. 'They are weak,' he whispered to the empty room, his voice echoing with the weight of a fallen god. 'But they must be kept that way.' With a wave of his hand, he tightened the magical bindings on the stone, ensuring the Nephalem would never reach their full potential, sealing them in a prison of ignorance while he awaited the day he could reclaim what was once his.
Reader's Guide
The metaphysical structure of the Diablo universe is defined by the Eternal Conflict, a war between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells that has raged since time immemorial. This conflict created the Void, from which the Worldstone was eventually forged to create Sanctuary. Inarius's actions fundamentally altered this balance by introducing a third variable: humanity. By mixing angelic and demonic blood, he created beings capable of surpassing both sides, threatening the established order of the cosmos. The Worldstone served as the anchor for this new reality, filtering out divine influence to allow free will. However, the theological conflict escalated when Inarius turned against his own creation. Fearing the power of the Nephalem, he manipulated events to suppress their heritage, leading to a cycle of betrayal and war that continues to shape the fate of Sanctuary.
