The campaign begins with Malthael declaring war on all angels to claim the Black Soulstone. Tyrael initially attempts to stop him using traditional means but realizes he is bound by laws that prevent direct intervention against another angel without catastrophic consequences. He travels to the Nephalem, seeking their aid while preparing his own sacrifice. In a climactic confrontation, he removes his wings and stabs himself with the Sword of Justice.
