Death of Tyrael
The Archangel sacrifices his divinity to become mortal and save humanity from the Reaper.
The Death of Tyrael marks one of the most pivotal moments in the history of Sanctuary, occurring during the events of Diablo III: Reaper of Souls. It refers not to the permanent end of the character, but to the deliberate sacrifice of his angelic life by the Archangel of Justice. Faced with the genocidal threat posed by Malthael and the strict laws preventing divine interference in mortal affairs, Tyrael chose to sever his connection to the High Heavens.

Lore & Background
The act was a profound violation of his own nature. By removing his wings and striking his own heart with the Sword of Justice, Tyrael extinguished his divine spark. This was not suicide in the traditional sense, but a metamorphosis. He traded immortality for mortality, accepting the fragility of human life to ensure that Sanctuary would survive Malthael's crusade. His survival as a man proved that justice could exist outside the rigid structures of Heaven and Hell.
In Their Own Story
The light faded from his eyes before the steel even touched skin. Standing upon the threshold between worlds, Tyrael looked at the wings that had carried him for eons. They were heavy now, anchors to a kingdom that refused to save humanity. With a trembling hand, he drew the blade of Justice. There was no sound of battle, only the wet tear of flesh and the silence of divinity leaving a vessel. As the light vanished from his form, the Archangel fell, but a man stood up in his place.
Reader's Guide
The campaign begins with Malthael declaring war on all angels to claim the Black Soulstone. Tyrael initially attempts to stop him using traditional means but realizes he is bound by laws that prevent direct intervention against another angel without catastrophic consequences. Tyrael discovers that only a mortal can safely wield the power needed to counter Malthael without corrupting Sanctuary further. He travels to the Nephalem, seeking their aid while preparing his own sacrifice. In a climactic confrontation, he removes his wings and stabs himself with the Sword of Justice. This act transforms him into a human, allowing him to bypass the restrictions of Heaven. He joins the Nephalem on Sanctuary's ground, fighting alongside them against Malthael's forces. The event fundamentally shifts the conflict: angels can no longer dictate events from above, forcing mortals to take ownership of their destiny and sealing the fate of the Eternal Conflict in a new direction.
