Forged by the Archangel Inarius from his own essence and primordial energy after the Eternal Conflict, the Worldstone was the source of Sanctuary's existence and the barrier that hid the world from both Heaven and Hell. It was not a seal constructed by the High Heavens to imprison the Prime Evils. Instead, after the Dark Exile, the Prime Evils were banished to Sanctuary and trapped within Soulstones by the Horadrim, acting on Tyrael's orders. The Worldstone's protective aura did not imprison them; it merely suppressed the power of the Nephalem—humanity's ancestors. For centuries, it held firm, keeping Sanctuary hidden. However, the Worldstone's integrity relied on its stability. When Baal corrupted the Worldstone in Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, the Archangel Tyrael destroyed it to prevent its complete corruption. This destruction removed the veil, allowing angels and demons to directly intervene in Sanctuary. Crucially, this event did not 'reawaken' the Nephalem; their power had been suppressed by the Worldstone. Its destruction allowed their latent potential to gradually manifest, leading to the first true Nephalem emerging in centuries during Diablo III.

As the barrier dissolved into motes of dying starlight, the silence was broken only by the roar of Mephisto's laughter echoing from the abyss, signaling the end of an age and the beginning of a nightmare.

The Great Seal functions as a metaphysical lock rather than a physical object. It operates through the manipulation of divine energy, creating a zone where demonic essence cannot manifest or cross over into the mortal realm. In-world, the seal is maintained by high-ranking angels who channel their power into specific focal points, often linked to the Worldstone. When active, it appears as an impenetrable wall of light and distortion that repels any attempt at invasion. However, if the anchor points are corrupted or the maintaining forces are weakened, the seal can be breached from either side. No single mortal wields the Great Seal; it is a collective effort of the High Heavens. Only beings with immense divine authority, such as Archangels, possess the power to repair or reinforce it once broken. Mortals can only hope for its protection or aid in its restoration by destroying the entities that seek to break it.
