Malthael's Betrayal

The Archangel of Wisdom turned into the Angel of Death to purge humanity from existence.

Malthael's Betrayal marks the tragic transformation of Malthael, the former Archangel of Wisdom and leader of the Angiris Council, into the Angel of Death. Once a guardian of mortal souls, he concluded that humanity was an abomination created by the Eternal Conflict between angels and demons. Believing the only way to end the cycle of suffering was to eradicate all human life, he defied Heaven's command to let mortals live.

Lore & Background

Malthael abandoned his post and stole the Black Soulstone, an artifact capable of containing infinite power, intending to use it to harvest every soul on Sanctuary. In doing so, he ascended to become the Angel of Death, a role previously thought to be nonexistent or held by no one. His betrayal was not born of simple malice but of a twisted sense of mercy; he believed that death was the only peace humanity could ever know. This led him to hunt down his former allies and the Nephalem, culminating in a final confrontation where his logic was challenged by the very life he sought to extinguish.

In Their Own Story

The air on Sanctuary grew cold as Malthael descended, his golden armor now tarnished with the dark hues of death. He hovered above the ruins of a once-great city, watching the souls flicker like dying embers. 'You are not meant to be,' he whispered, his voice echoing with the weight of eons. Below, a lone warrior raised a blade forged from starlight and shadow. Malthael's eyes, devoid of their former warmth, narrowed. 'I offer you an end to your pain.' The warrior stepped forward, unafraid. 'Then take it,' they replied, 'but know that our struggle is what makes us alive.'

Reader's Guide

Malthael's fall represents one of the most significant betrayals in the history of Sanctuary. Originally the Archangel of Wisdom, he was respected by his peers for his deep understanding of the universe and the Eternal Conflict. His transformation began when he discovered that humanity, specifically the Nephalem, still held immense power. Instead of seeing this as a sign of hope, Malthael viewed it as proof that the conflict between Heaven and Hell would never cease as long as mortals existed. Convinced that extinction was the only mercy left for humanity, he stole the Black Soulstone to facilitate a genocide. He shed his title of Wisdom to become the Angel of Death, hunting down both humans and angels who opposed him. Ultimately, Malthael's plan was thwarted by the Nephalem hero, proving that life, with all its pain and potential for evil, is worth fighting for. His defeat serves as a reminder that even the most wise can be corrupted by despair.
