Lore & Background

The Council's history is not without deep scars. The most significant fracture occurred when Inarius, an Archangel but never a member of the Angiris Council, disillusioned with the endless cycle of conflict and believing that humanity could be protected only by removing them from the war, conspired with Lilith to create Sanctuary as a refuge hidden from both Heaven and Hell. This act was deemed heresy, leading to his imprisonment and torture at the hands of Imperius and the Angiris Council; Mephisto's torture occurred later in Hell. Later, when Malthael witnessed the rise of the Nephalem and perceived humanity's potential for corruption, he abandoned his post as the Angel of Wisdom and transformed into the Angel of Death before absorbing the Black Soulstone, seeking to purge mankind entirely.

In Their Own Story

The air within the Spire of Light was thick with the scent of ozone and ancient incense. Tyrael stood before the Council, his golden armor gleaming under the ethereal glow that never faded in the Heavens. "They are rising," he announced, his voice resonating like a bell struck deep within a cavern. Malthael, seated to his left, did not look up from the scrolls of fate he was reviewing, his expression unreadable behind a mask of serene detachment. "Let them rise," Malthael replied softly, though his eyes held a cold calculation that chilled even the divine air. "Order will be restored, one way or another." The silence that followed was heavier than any weapon forged in the mortal realm, a testament to the fragile unity holding the High Heavens together.

Reader's Guide

The Angiris Council serves as the administrative and military leadership of the High Heavens, directly answering only to the Prime. Their primary duty is to wage war against the Burning Hells and maintain cosmic balance through the enforcement of Order. Each member represents a core virtue: Tyrael (Justice), Malthael (Wisdom), Auriel (Hope), Itherael (Fate), and originally Inarius (Faith). While they appear united, their interpretations of how to protect creation often clash, leading to significant internal conflicts that have shaped the fate of Sanctuary. Throughout history, the Council has intervened in mortal affairs, sometimes subtly through angels like Tyrael who walked among humans, and other times through direct, catastrophic warfare. The defection of Inarius and the subsequent fall of Malthael highlight the dangers inherent in their rigid adherence to specific doctrines when faced with the unpredictable nature of free will.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who makes up the Angiris Council?

The Angiris Council is the ruling body of the High Heavens, comprised of five Archangels who serve under the Creator’s mandate. Each member embodies a specific virtue to guide the divine order against chaos.

What is the primary role of the Angiris Council?

They function as the supreme military and spiritual leaders tasked with maintaining universal balance by opposing Hell. Their collective power ensures that the Eternal Conflict remains contained rather than destroying existence.

Who were the original members of the group?

Originally consisting of Tyrael, Malthael, Imperius, Auriel, and Itherael, the group has suffered significant losses over time. Key members like Tyrael sacrificed their divinity while others fell to corruption or death during recent conflicts.

How did the story of the Angiris Council change?

The council’s traditional structure was broken when Malthael left to become the Angel of Death and Tyrael became mortal. This shift marked a major turning point in how Heaven interacts with Sanctuary and the Eternal Conflict.

Why is the Angiris Council important to Diablo lore?

They are crucial because they represent the only organized force capable of resisting the Prime Evils on a cosmic scale. Without their intervention, the universe would likely succumb entirely to the chaos of Hell.
