The Siege on Mount Arreat represents the climactic conflict of the Lord of Destruction era, marking a turning point for all of Sanctuary. Lore & Background
Mount Arreat served as a final bastion for the Barbarians of Harrogath, housing the legendary Worldstone that anchored reality. Baal sought to corrupt this artifact to spread his influence across Sanctuary indefinitely, leading him to besiege the mountain's foothills with legions of demons. The assault was brutal, nearly wiping out the local defenses before the Hero could intervene. The conflict escalated when Tyrael revealed that simply killing Baal would not be enough; the Worldstone itself had been tainted by his imprisonment within it. If left intact, it remained a beacon for future demonic invasions, potentially allowing other evils to rise again through its corrupted power. This realization forced an impossible choice upon the defenders. Ultimately, Tyrael chose to destroy the artifact in a unilateral decision against the wishes of the Angiris Council, an act that was not sanctioned by the High Heavens and led to his fall. The resulting explosion devastated Mount Arreat and removed Sanctuary's primary magical shield against demonic corruption. While this act saved the world from immediate enslavement, it left humanity exposed to future threats without the Worldstone's protective influence.
In Their Own Story
The wind howled around the jagged peaks, carrying the scent of sulfur and old blood through the frozen air. Deckard Cain stood before the pulsating blue orb, his staff trembling not from cold, but from the weight of what must come next. He watched the light fracture within the stone as the Archangel raised a blade forged in heaven's fire above him. 'It is done,' Cain whispered, knowing that with this blow, the world would change forever.
Reader's Guide
Mephisto arrives in Harrogath with his minions, overwhelming the Barbarian defenses at the mountain's base. The village burns as demons swarm the foothills, forcing survivors to flee deeper into the wilderness. The Hero receives a vision from Tyrael, urging an ascent up Mount Arreat to stop the Lord of Hatred before he reaches the Worldstone Keep. Inside the frozen depths, ancient Horadrim wards resist the invasion for only so long against such concentrated evil. Upon reaching the summit, the Hero confronts Mephisto within the corrupted sanctum where Baal was previously defeated. The battle is fierce, ending with the Prime Evil's physical form being destroyed by the player character's blade. However, Tyrael reveals that Mephisto's essence can still corrupt the Worldstone from beyond death if it remains intact for future use. To prevent any Prime Evil from ever manipulating reality again, the Archangel makes a terrible choice to save Sanctuary long-term. He smashes the Worldstone with his sword, causing the mountain peak to collapse and Sanctuary to lose its divine protection against hellish influence. This act ensures no Prime Evil can rule forever but leaves the world vulnerable to future threats without that anchor.
